While the Northeast is being hit with yet another snow storm, I can’t help but reflect on warmer weather, my garden, and flowers; especially my favorite – the rose. Due to its popularity in celebrating one’s heartfelt emotions, it serves to reason that it’s one of the most popular gifts shared on Valentine’s Day.
The word rose comes from the Latin word rosa meaning red, and the flower has been a symbol of love since ancient times. There are thousands of varieties which can range from hedges or climbers, cutting, container, border – the list goes on. They can stand erect, arch, scramble and trail with their unique shape, scent, and range of color.
My photo gallery of roses has grown over the years and I thought it would be fun to share some of them along with the unique meaning behind each rose color.
Red Rose
The red rose is the enduring symbol of love and affection; probably the most popular to give when you want to say “I love you.”
Pink Rose
The classic symbol of grace and elegance, the pink rose is often given as a token of admiration and appreciation.
Orange Rose
Fiery energy is attached to the orange rose. When your feelings evoke enthusiasm, passion, or gratitude, this might be the rose you want to share.
Yellow Rose
The yellow rose is the traditional symbol of friendship. They can light up a room with their warmth and sunny demeanor. They’re the perfect way to say thank you, congratulations or “I’m glad you’re in my life.”
I love receiving roses of any kind, but my favorite is this mixed variety – I guess I get all the rose meanings mixed into one this way.

Great post! I love roses! When I was in HS we had a day where we could buy roses to help support the school for really cheap. We had all those different colors with the meanings 🙂 It was fun
