Shut Up And Take Your Blessing

shut upIt appears that I ticked off everyone as they left the house today.

In an effort to offer some simple reminders, I apparently crossed into the “NAG ZONE”. I found myself, with each attempt, tightening my shoulders – just waiting to pounce. My mind began to rant – What are they getting annoyed at me for; after all, it’s my house! I’ve just spent the last hour picking up after everyone else. Did they find the kitchen this way? Is it really that much more effort to walk 2 feet and place your clothes away or in the hamper than it is to drop them on the floor?
Just then, as I grabbed for the creamer out of the fridge, I noticed a scripture I keep there

Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up; as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29

I recalled the commitment I made on Ash Wednesday (ugh, was that only 2 days ago?) where I said I’d begin with the words “forgive us our trespasses AS we forgive those who trespass against us”. Then….I humbly thought……..this is going to be a very long 40 days.

We all have those moments where a snarky remark comes out – I’ve certainly had my share with family and friends. To recognize where those snarky remarks come from is the key, I believe, to overcoming them. Why did all of this really bother me? Was I feeling used? Was I worried for them? Am I trying to build a better character in them? Was I tired? Was it really a big deal? These are questions that you will have to answer for yourself and your situation.

I couldn’t help but smile, however, when I recalled HOW each of them left the house. You see, no matter what the mood, since my children were babies, before leaving the house, I’ve placed the sign of the cross on their foreheads and blessed them. To this day, into their late 20’s, they always kiss me good-bye and hesitate just a moment longer, waiting for that blessing – even when they’re not thrilled with me.

This past Christmas, my son couldn’t wait for me to open my “special gift” – a mug that sums it all up – Shut up and take your blessing! Yep, I wonder how many times God wants to say that to us when our tongues just won’t stop.

Today, I’m counting my blessings – I have many, and my heart is once again at peace.
