Up and at ‘em! For the past month, I’ve challenged myself to really being consistent with my walk routine. Winter months on the treadmill is often challenging for me, however outdoor walking just invigorates me. I love starting my morning with a walk. I’ve gone from 30 minutes a few years ago to a full hour and a half everyday. My mind is clear, my body is stronger, and my soul is peaceful. What activity would you love to become consistent with? What’s stopping you? #consistency

What change have you been putting off that you can take action on today? I did a lot of thinking on my walk today. Obviously thinking about how quickly our world has changed. Change is hard. Change is uncomfortable. But I know firsthand that without change, we don’t stretch and grow. We stay in the same place voicing complaints about why we aren’t moving forward. On a more personal level these are the things I’ve come to know about change. IT’S NOT A PLACE TO TRAVEL TO, ITS A PLACE WE CREATE! I’m not sure I’ve ever felt that more than I have the last few years. We get stuck in the comfortable. It’s what we know. It’s what comes easy. So many times we let ourself off the hook by saying I’ll do that tomorrow. That attitude denied me the power in every moment to make the changes I desired. Change is now. It’s in every moment! Don’t let delay distract you from what you can do now. When you push your goals to tomorrow it robs you of the opportunity for progress. If we keep focusing on why we can’t make changes, we are simply talking ourselves into the problems instead of talking ourselves into what WE could create. We give the problems our power. We are building walls. We prolong the struggle! If we keep talking ourselves out of change today, there is greater opportunity to talk ourselves out of change tomorrow . If we persist in pushing through the uncomfortable today there is a greater chance we will push through it again tomorrow. We can choose change or we can choose more of the same. Life was supposed to be different in this second half. I dreamt of these days, years ago, where time wouldn’t be spent chasing children and dreams and I would settle into a routine and write. But -here I am with time and space, yet the words seem stuck. We’re coming out of what was a pretty tough season and it seems that in the midst of the chaos, words found an easier escape from the heart to the journal than they have now. The second half of life is upon me and I’m learning I have to live in this pause and reflect. I’m not used to this quiet and some days it can be deafening. As if living through this pandemic isn’t strange enough, the shift from snow and deep freeze one week ago and almost 90 degrees this week had me unnerved! As I lay here, with aching back and throbbing hands, there is a deep sense of satisfaction. After an early morning cup of coffee looking out over the fields, I was off to reconnect with my garden. Dirty fingernails and a sweaty brow was all I needed to feel that connection again with my soul. Gardening helps me reconnect to another place and time. It’s where I forgive, where I’m challenged, where I wrestle with worries and where I’m inspired to take chances. It’s where hope is planted, faith is restored, and love blooms. Stillness and childhood aren’t words you usually hear together, but to capture those moments is like catching a firefly. I always looked forward to summertime when schedules slowed down and days took on a more relaxed feel. Despite the lazy days of summer, there were a few structured activities that were a given every day. One of them was rest. Now for some moms, this would be a given for their sanity, and I’m sure on some days it was for me as well. Truth be told though, it was my favorite part of being home with my kids. Story time was a staple in our day and if off on one of our outdoor adventures, cloud watching and daydreaming took its place. On rainy days we’d pitched furniture tents filled with coloring books and crayons. As they grew older, rest became something they sought for themselves. Kids learn a lot in those quiet moments of rest – about themselves, their world, and their creator. It’s magical to catch them in those moments where peace and contentment wash over them and they find rest for their souls. What grace to bring that gift with us to adulthood.
